Edinburgh Events: Things to do in May

1 May / Summerhall, 1 Summerhall, EH9 1PL / £20 or £40
The Fireside Collective are celebrating the bounty of spring with a three course communal feast, with everything delicious the season has to offer - think fresh produce like asparagus, wild garlic, spring salads and a cake table with rhubarb, gooseberry and rose petal treats.  All served in the blooming Dissection Room at Summerhall with special cocktails and floral wreaths to adorn your head.  It all sounds absolutely magical and with flowers by Pyrus it will be sure to look stunning. To finish the night off, there is dancing til to Motown and soul. You can either book tickets for the whole evening for £40 or just for the dancing (which also gets you a cocktail) for £20.

29 April - 11 May / various locations but based at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, 43-45 High Street, EH1 1SR /
If you're wanting a bit of Scottish culture in the form of music, song, story and dance this is exactly the festival for you.  Timed to coinicide with and inspired by the rites of Beltane and May Day, it's a multi-arts festival giving folk/trad a contemporary spin.  If you've ever been interested in folk music, now's the time to seek it out with Scottish, Gaelic and international acts playing, including performances from Breabach, Rachel Newton, Wounded Knee and the brilliantly named Horndog Brass Band.  There'll be storytelling and literature events, including a pretty awesome sounding Whisky and Tales walking tour of taverns.  Visit their webpage for details of the full lineup.

14, 15 & 16 May / Nestle Condensed Milk Factory, 4 Wellington Place, EH6 7EQ / £20
As part of Whisky Month, Jelly & Gin are are taking over a former milk factory in Leith and creating a multi-sensory adventure to encompass four flavour profiles of whisky.  Ambitious stuff but we'd expect nothing less from our favourite avant-garde food artists.  Along with four drams from Jura Whisky single malts, there'll be changes in atmosphere during the tasting through the use of lighting, projection, sound and scent and of course some artisan bites to eat.  You can always expect the spectacular with Jelly & Gin and this night is no exception.

World Wide Insta-meet
Sunday 18 May / Princes Street (further details TBC)
If you love a selfie, hashtag everything and think that Instagram is #totesamazeballs then you'll probably want to go to the World Wide Insta-meet that's taking place on 18 May.  It's being organised by @igersedi and details at the moment are a wee bit sketchy but somewhere near the Scott Monument/National Gallery (very photogenic places) around 11am seems to be the plan at the moment.  Just search for #instameetedinburgh for the details.

24 & 25 May / Surgeon's Hall, Nicolson Street, EH8 9DW / From £28
Unsurprisingly during Whisky Month, there's a few events on celebrating the grain.  One of the biggest and best in Edinburgh is The Whisky Stramash which returns again this year with not only an epic 200 different whiskies from around the world to sample but some hush-hush events too.  Previous events have included Peter Capaldi performing in a Jura murder mystery so expectations of what's to come are high.  Sure to sell out quickly so get a ticket while you can.

  1. Blossom party sounds amazing, wish I'd heard of it earlier. Next one though. Also I cannot wait for Gin month. It is going to be amazing. WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE'S NO GIN MONTH.

    1. There absolutely should be a gin month. We should start one!
