Edinburgh Events: Things to do in December

December is pretty much here - it's time to get full on festive!  We merrily encourage you to visit the Christmas markets, drink some festive cocktails and try to squeeze in some of these awesome Edinburgh events into your social calendar if you can.
From 28 November / Lyceum Theatre, 30b Grindlay Street, EH3 9AX / 2:30 & 7pm / From £14
This much-loved Dickens story has been told many ways* and is a Christmas classic.  This production, staged at the beautiful Royal Lyceum Theatre, promises a wonderfully evocative set and the odd flurry of snow and will have you in the festive spirit along with Scrooge in no time.
* our favourite being with Michael Caine and the Muppets

Pop-Up Shops with booze
A few of our favourite Edinburgh designers are popping up in December at some of our favourite bars.  Vivid Please is having an exhibition at Sofis Bar from now until January - you can tell it's going to be pretty special from the awesome giant screen printed specs on the walls; their sweet & clever prints are the kind of gift anyone would be thrilled to receive.  This weekend (30 Nov & 1 Dec) Fiona Heather will be at Lucky Liquor Co, showcasing her latest mens range, new fabric prints and making bow ties made to order (we're really hoping there'll be a dog in a bowtie there too). And on 11 December, Vi Noveau will be at Hemma Bar selling their vintage and customised clothes along with homewares and collectibles from Ivy Rose Vintage.

From Wednesday 4 December / Summerhall, 1 Summerhall, EH9 1PL / 9:30pm / £12.50
Prepare yourself for an epic night out - Hot Dub Time Machine was one of the most popular shows from this year's Fringe and it's back this December!  It was one of our Fringe recommendations - we loved it then and can't wait to re-live the CHOONS.

Sunday 8 December / HMV Picturehouse, 31 Lothian Road, EH1 2DJ / 11am - 5pm / £2 entry
Judy's vintage fair returns to Edinburgh just in time for Christmas, so it's a perfect opportunity to purchase gifts galore as well as a few pre-Christmas treats for yourself!  There'll be a veritable vintage feast of goodies from 45 different traders all under one roof, with the usual accessories, homewares, menswear, ladieswear, childrenswear and gifts.  There will also be vintage-styled live music to enjoy as well as drinks, so expect some festive delights!

Thursday 12 December / Summerhall, 1 Summerhall, EH9 1PL / 6:30 - 8pm / £5
In an era of text messages and emails, does anyone write letters anymore?  It's becoming a lost art and Simon Garfield, author of one of our favourite books, Just My Type, hopes to rectify this by reviving the art of the perfectly penned letter and discussing how letter-writing as a form of communication expresses our emotions in a way technology is not able to.*  If you want to send a heartfelt missive this holiday season, come and be inspired.
* If you're in any doubt you should check out Letters of Note, one of the most beautiful and inspiring websites out there.

Sunday 15 December / Lovecrumbs, 155 West Port, EH3 9DP / 5 - 8pm / £35 per person
We're rather fond of wreaths, so heartily approve of Pyrus' Christmas wreath making class.  They're known as one of the finest and most inventive florists in Edinburgh so you can be sure you'll be taking home a super fancy festive botanical decoration.  And, as if we couldn't love this workshop any more, it's taking place in Lovecrumbs, one our favourite Edinburgh cake shops, so you'll have some sweet treats to enjoy too.  A swag making class is also taking place on Thursday 19 December.

Sunday 22 December, Usher Hall, Lothian Road, EH1 2EA / 3pm / From £12.50
Nothing says Christmas time like singing a few rousing carols, hearing the gentle tinkling of the Nutcracker and of course, watching the Snowman.  It's a family friendly event at a hangover friendly time so a perfect way to kick off the Christmas week and get into the spirit!
