Style Icon: Margot Tenenbaum

With her sharp bob, heavy eyeliner, sulky expression and white gloves, I fell in love with Margot Tenenbaum's style from the first time I saw Wes Anderson's classic film, The Royal Tenenbaums. Her staple uniform of stripy Lacoste dresses, hair slide and gloves was effortlessly cool and she rocked a beautifully chunky wide collared golden fur coat.  She was the sophisticated but sullen arty type that I longed to be a brunette version of.  And it seems I'm not alone in my style crush - I was super thrilled to read that Orla Kiely was inspired by Margot Tenenbaum for her A/W13 collection which is just on sale now.  My first inkling that it was going to be pretty awesome was seeing Lily Collins wearing this OK coat in Glamour.  I love pretty much everything that's going on in this picture and there's a cute dog to boot.
Now that the new range is available instores and online, you can definitely see Margot's influence. And we love the sports-luxe squirrel style too.
Although we can admire Orla Kiely coats and D&G collared dresses all day long, our budget doesn't quite stretch this far so we'll make do with the following more purse-friendly options, all from Etsy.

Thrillingly, it looks as though Orla Kiely's S/S14 range has a Suzy Bishop (from Moonrise Kingdom) feel to it, with a 1970's safari scout vibe (which is totally a thing) with giraffe and lion prints subbing the squirrels.  OK shows are always quite beautiful and you can see the safari-inspired video here.

What do you think of the Margot T inspired fashion?  Do you love Wes Anderson films and his sullen heroines as much as we do?

  1. Saw a brown faux fur coat in a charity shop today and was *this* close to buying it. I loves me some Margot.
