Edinburgh Events: April Things To Do

Oh Edinburgh, you are truly spoiling us this April. Our calendars are full of exciting things to do this month and here are our top picks of the bunch!

12-14 April / 30-36 Dalmeny St, EH6 8RG / Day ticket £6, Weekend ticket £10, concessions available
This weekend Out of the Blue Drill Hall are holding their springtime take on Oktoberfest! Not only will there be plenty of the gold stuff flowing, there'll be fun things like live music, a Bavarian ceilidh, yodelling, competitive wood chopping and Ma├čkrugstemmen - which is apparently competitive beer mug holding (which I'd be rubbish at - I lazily rest my pint on my boobs after 5 minutes). There's a Bavarian white sausage brunch on the Sunday too. Three days of Bavarian beer, food and dancing sounds like a pretty awesome way to spend the weekend to us.

13 April / 65 Henderson St, EH6 6ED / 3pm onwards / Free
The new season of New Girl started recently and we can't wait to see what happens between Jess and Nick. Sofi's Bar are excited too and are having an afternoon celebrating by showing the whole of the first series. There will also be some very Jess-like activities - crafting, knitting, cupcakes, cocktails, games of 'True American', douche bag jar raffle and most excitingly of all, a Best Jess Dress competition! Seeing what Zooey Deschanel is wearing in NG is pretty much one of the main reasons to watch it so grab the curling tongs and get biggest 50's prom dress you can find if you want in.

19-21 April / 1 Summerhall, EH9 1PL / 7pm / £15, concession available
Deadinburgh is an experimental zombie theatre show set in our fair city, where the audience helps to decide how to save Edinburgh. You will either think this sounds amazing or terrifying, depending on how you view 28 Days Later and/or audience participation. Deadinburgh uses actors as well as scientists to help us, the humble audience who are the last uninfected citizens of the city, decide how to save Edinburgh and perhaps the world. Oh the responsibility! Being a fan of both zombie films and saving the world, this is right up our street and sounds suspiciously like we may learn something too.

Record Store Day is held annually on the third Saturday of April and is the perfect opportunity to support Edinburgh's fine independent record stores and get yourself some vinyl. Every year there are special releases that you have to visit a record shop to purchase and this year's selection looks pretty damn fine (if I can get hold of the Suede, Beta Band or Jesus & Mary Chain limited edition vinyl I will be one happy girl). There are usually in-store gigs and events held too. Avalanche Records have Glasvegas and Admiral Fallow playing in the afternoon (from 2:30pm). VoxBox Music are teaming up with excellent label Song, By Toad in a Beer vs. Records standoff (a physical vinyl record vs. a bottle of Barney's beer with a music download code - which will sell out first?) and have an impressive line-up for the day with eagleowl, Wounded Knee, Honeyblood and Mike Heron Band playing from 12pm. Elvis Shakespeare have St Max & the Fanatics and Oi Polloi playing, as well as 25% off all vinyl purchased on the day.

  1. Oh these look really fun! Deadinburgh looks especially interesting.

    1. I know, I can't wait for Deadinburgh! It's great to have such a unique event here :-)
