Weekends Adventures Away: London & Brighton

Last weekend I went to London to visit some pals, do a bit of shopping and generally have a bit of a carry on.  We ended up having a day trip to Brighton to see my friend's awesome band on the Saturday night which was proper fun - here's some pics and some of my favourite places to visit.

1.  Some of the great and good things about London, right there on a tea tray.  This was in one of my must-visit shops in Covent Garden, Magma - full of lots of gorgeous stationery and design products. They also have an excellent book shop a few doors down which has lots of beautiful design books and some of my favourite magazines.  One of my other must-visits in Covent Garden is the newly opened Laduree cafe.  So now all the best Parisian patisserie can be yours without making a trip over the Thames

2.  I had a super girly afternoon and went to get my nails done at Wah! Nails in Topshop.  They have a huge board of nail art that you choose what you want with custom colours.  They can even do you a bespoke design for £5 per nail.  These are my Christmas nails which are still going strong!  The Wah! girls know what they're doing and it's amazing to watch them paint everything by hand.  We also went to Meat Liquor down the road, which is still my favourite place for burgers and cocktails in London.  I had a Dead Hippy burger which is a double burger of meaty goodness.  They also do deep fried pickles with blue cheese dip which is just the best thing ever really.

3.  I stayed at my lovely friend Alice's place in North London which had all kinds of cool stuff in it - I had total ornament envy.  She is super crafty and had just finished a super cute cross-stitch project of a yorkie terrier which makes me really want to start crafting again soon.

4.  We went for brunch at top new hipster cafe Caravan based in Central St Martins and I had this amazing avocado with lemon, chili and olive oil on sourdough toast, with creamed corn and bacon.  Pure heaven!  They do a really good mix of modern small plates and US west coast style fresh flavours.  It's just a 5 minute walk away from Kings Cross station so perfect if you have a bit of time to kill before your train ride back to Edinburgh.  Kings Cross station has changed so much in the past six months and is actually a pleasure to visit (as opposed to the absolute dump it once was).  There's a Leon, a Patisserie Valerie and you can even get a burrito from Benitos Hat!

1.  We were so lucky to have a sunny day in Brighton.  We had fish and chips on the pier and had a go at some of the games - me & Alice played on the DDR machine where one of the biggest challenges is trying to find songs that you know to dance to!  One of the nicest things about being in Brighton is visiting the pier and enjoying listening to the sea and watching people walk their dogs along the prom.

2.  We visited our friend's Eleanor and Jimmy dress shop Dig For Victory which sells dresses in vintage fabrics and can make custom made to measure too.  Their shop is gorgeous and they've done so well, with customers including Bat For Lashes and MIA.  The dresses are beautiful and I had a wee peek at their vintage fabric storage which We know Eleanor and Jimmy through their ukelele twee pop band, The Bobby McGees who are lots of fun too.

3.  Shopping in Brighton is amazing and a really nice place to get presents from is Choccywoccydoodah with their incredible chocolate creations.  I don't know anyone that could bear to eat this sad looking deer though!  One of the best thnigs to do in Brighton is to visit the Lanes and North Laine - the vintage and jewellery shops there are amazing.  The biggest is Snoopers Paradise which has flea market style stalls selling vintage books, clothes and design - you could spend ages in there!

4.  Riots Not Diets put on a super fun show which included a showing of Take Three Girls, the Dolly Mixtures film, and my friends bands Fulhast and Cosines (pictured, though I managed to miss Simon & Dan from the photo!).  The Cosines are awesome and any band that has a song about sailor boys and girl pirates is definitely worth loving.
