It's December! Time to get festive and go shopping

This weekend marks the beginning of the craziness that is December.  Here's our pick of places to visit to kick-start your festive spirit and start your Christmas shopping!

1. Edinburgh Christmas Markets
East Princes Street Gardens
The German markets are back and, along with Christmas tree yards popping up in the most random places, herald the official start of the festive season in Edinburgh! You know the drill - ice skating, gluhwein, waffles with apple sauce, German beer, sausages and as many samples of stollen and spicy biscuits as you can manage.

2. A Spoonful of Vintage Fair
Sunday 2 December / 11am - 5pm / Spoon, 6a Nicolson Street, EH8 9DH
A Christmas edition of Spoon's popular vintage fair. There's always a great mix of vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles and homewares at Spoon and there will also be vintage hair and make-up styling from Boosh, who did some fabulous victory rolls on my last visit there! Spoon has fab retro surroundings and does one of the best brunches in town - they'll be serving festive treats of mince pies and mulled wine and I've heard tell of some home baking and cakes too.

3. Grainne Morton Sample Sale
Saturday & Sunday, 1 & 2 December / 12pm - 6pm / 147 Colinton Road, EH14 1BG
Edinburgh-based jeweller Grainne Morton is having an open studio sample sale this weekend and it's an opportunity to pick up some of her past work at a reduced price and her current pieces at 15% off. Grainne produces beautiful vintage-inspired pieces, some of which incorporate found objects to make them unique and special items. You can see some examples of her work at Seek and Adore.

4. Bruntsfield Christmas Evening
Wednesday 5 December / Until 8pm / Bruntsfield Place & surrounds
Shops are open until 8pm next Wednesday in Bruntsfield to give you an opportunity to get an early start on your present shopping. There will be carol singers, wine tasting at Oddbins, chocolate sampling at The Chocolate Tree and drinks & nibbles tempting shoppers. Our top shopping tip is the visit newly opened antiques store Tippi for some unusual and stylish gifts that you won't be able to get anywhere else.

  1. I'm SO excited about the Edinburgh Christmas markets - even if the gluhwein isn't exactly authentic... They're just such lovely places to wander around on dark evenings. I will definitely fall over on the ice rink though. x

    1. I always fall over the ice rink! Or get blisters from my strange skating style. The un-athentic gluhwein makes it all better though ;-)

    1. I went last night and it was much fun though very packed! I'm glad I've been before the scheduled snow - have memories of trudging through slush a few years ago! And yes, Tippi is ace!
