Edinburgh Events: The week ahead...

Woohoo, it's Friday!  Time to start planning for week ahead - here are our top Edinburgh picks of things to see and do...

1.  Cocktails in the City
Wednesday 28 Nov / £18 / Mansfield Traquair, 15 Mansfield Place
I already make a pretty dry martini, but Cocktails in the City will have visitors learning all the tricks of the trade to mix up some sophisticated cocktails.  You'll be treated to a mixing masterclass from some of Edinburgh's finest bars including some of our faves The Voodoo Rooms, Bond No 9, Tonic and The Blackbird.  There's also Tutored Tastings with a chance to try different types of whisky, tequila and beer - downing tequilas is probably our new favourite way to learn things.

2.  Gifted Exhibition
24 Nov - 8 Dec / Free / Scottish Poetry Library, 5 Crichton's Close
Last year beautifully intricate book sculptures were left anonymously in places throughout Edinburgh, gifted with notes supporting the institutions where they were left.  Given that around this time cuts were being made by the Government to art foundations and libraries it was a poignant reminder of the beauty that words and story telling can inspire.  Ten sculptures were made and now they are on tour around libraries of Scotland.  They'll be in Edinburgh for two weeks so come and marvel at the beauty of these gifts.

3. The Art and History of The Dandy Exhibition
21 Nov - 3 Feb / Free / The National Library, George IV Bridge
I'm a huge fan of vintage comics (the picture above features pages from all my own annuals) and, as The Dandy's print run is coming to its end, the National Library has just opened an exhibition on its 75 year history.  If you ever loved Beryl the Peril, Korky the Cat, The Jocks & The Geordies or Desperate Dan (amongst many other alliterative names), it's definitely worth a visit.  Try and ignore the mild racism and corporal slippering and focus on the incredible artwork, fun stories, history and pictures of fish suppers and bangers & mash that even Dan himself would struggle with.

4. Hemma Pop-Up Boutique
Wednesday 28 Nov / Free / 75 Holyrood Road
Hemma is the newest addition to the Swedish pubs in Edinburgh and manages to stay homely and cosy even though it's really quite big indeed.  They're running a pre-Christmas pop up shop where you can sup their special mulled cider and browse accessories and jewellery from Scandinavian chic boutique Kakao By K along with a tea selection and teapots from Eteaket.  Come shop for your Christmas presents early and you can feel pleased that you're supporting local independent businesses whilst getting pished.
